Successful Home design for a 30M x 10M Narrow Block

The increasing cost of well-positioned land means that narrow housing is quickly becoming the way of the future, especially in urban areas. So, don’t be put off purchasing a block of land within your dream suburb, purely because the block is too narrow! Think UP not OUT.

Growing demand has meant that home builders have had to adapt.

We’ve worked with our designers to create a range of beautiful, unique and highly functional 2-storey and 1-storey narrow home designs to suit modern blocks of narrow land.

These are not simply large designs that have ‘been made smaller’. Our narrow home designs have been specially laid out to maximise the size of both internal and external living spaces – taking full advantage of the space provided.

One of our most highly sought-after narrow home designs is our ‘Ridgewood’.

Cleverly designed for a narrow 30m x 10m allotment, this stylish home design creates a true sense of space over two storeys.

This contemporary narrow design features a comfortable main living room, an open-plan kitchen and dining area that opens out to the covered alfresco area, four good sized bedrooms with an ensuite and walk-in-robe to the master.

Layout & Light

The more natural light you can let into your home, the more spacious it will feel.

Our narrow home designs feature a noticeable absence of internal walls between the kitchen, living and dining, creating beautiful open-plan living spaces that open directly onto an alfresco entertaining area.

Functional Spaces

Often new home builders are surprised to learn that many of the extra features or ‘luxuries’ that they would love to have, such as extra living areas, a butler’s pantry or a double garage, can be achieved on a narrow block through good, clever design.

Ensuring that no space has gone under-utilised, our narrow Ridgewood home design is certainly not short of little luxuries, featuring a ground floor theatre room, a butler’s pantry, a first floor sitting area, AND a two-car tandem garage.

Clever Design Elements

Good design comes down to the finer details, too, especially when designing a home to suit a 10M narrow block.

Here are some of our top design tips, (subtle yet effective) that will contribute largely towards the feel and function of a 2-storey narrow home design:

1) A Light Colour Palette

Choose a light neutral, or off-white colour palette, as this will reflect light – making your home feel more spacious and inviting.

2) High Ceilings

A ceiling 2.7m or higher will make even a small room look and feel larger than it is. If you are building a double storey home, consider voids above your hallway, living or kitchen areas, which will give an instant bright and spacious feel to the rooms.

3) Windows & Skylights

Narrow homes can feel gloomy as they are usually built tightly against side fences. Incorporate additional windows, especially to the North facing side of your home, or overhead skylights as another effective way to let in more light.

4) Cavity Sliding Doors

Install cavity sliding doors rather than a traditional door that opens in and out to keep hallways and/or foyers open and clean.

5) Clever Storage

Get creative with space saving storage options. Think ottomans or coffee tables that double as storage, a couch that doubles as a sofa bed, or even a vertical garden if you’ve always dreamed of having your own veggie garden!

6) Glass Kitchen Splashback

A clear, glass kitchen splashback is a trend that is fast becoming popular – and with good reason. Due to its highly sophisticated look, a glass splashback creates the illusion of more space, and brings the light and greenery in from the outdoors.
