Our top tips to beat the Winter chill and cosy-up your home!

Aug 8, 2018 | Inspiration

The art of hygge is the perfect way to beat the winter blues that come with cold, dark nights.

Hygge (pronounced hue-guh) is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, as cosy, charming or special. In essence, hygge is creating a nice, warm atmosphere.

This national obsession with all things cozy is credited as one of the reasons Denmark is always at the top of the list of the world’s happiest countries, despite their infamously miserable winters! Now the rest of the world is beginning to catch on to this wonderful way of life…

Create ambient lighting

If you ask a Danish person, they’re likely to tell you that candles are the most important part of creating a hygge atmosphere at home. It’s been said that the Danes burn a whopping 13 pounds of candle wax a year, more than any other country in the world. So, turn off that bright, unflattering overhead light, and light some candles, a fire or even some lanterns! Look for lighting sources that cast softness and warmth.

Cosy up to lush throws

There is no better feeling than snuggling up under a soft, fluffy throw on the lounge with a comforting cup of tea and a book, or with your favourite television show on. Whilst a snuggly throw will help keep your body heat in and provide a sense of comfort, you also won’t need to be amping your heater up too high, saving you money on your energy bills!

Put your phone down

Watching TV is ok, but sorry – staring at your phone screen is NOT hygge! Hygge is about cosying up with a good book, knitting, designing, sketching – anything that feeds your soul and lets you zone out from everyday life and relax. This doesn’t just have to be an indoor activity either. Taking a nice long walk through nature is also a part of creating that hygge feeling.

Create ‘togetherness’

The key to hygge is spending quality time with loved ones in a cosy and comfortable setting. It gives us that warm and fuzzy feeling inside! To embrace the concept, create a cosy, inviting area to gather with your friends and family. Invite loved ones over to watch movies, or if you’re feeling more social, cook up a pot of your signature dish and have them over for a fun board game night. Have fun getting hygge with it!

Cook up some comfort food

The good news is.. what you eat is also essential to creating those cosy hygge vibes! After all.. they don’t call it ‘comfort food’ for nothing! They hygge style of comfort food is all about homemade sweets and hot drinks. Whatever you whip up, it’s about creating comfort and familiarity. In Denmark that might mean pastries and copious amounts of coffee, but you might prefer a cup of hot coco with Grandma’s famous scones. Using the oven to create delicious treats will keep your house warmer and create an aroma that will have your home smelling fresh and inviting all day round, also adding a sense of comfort and cosiness.
